In the classic science-fiction film The Matrix, Neo meets Morpheus and asks him to tell him what “the matrix” is. Morpheus offers to show Neo, giving him the choice between taking a blue pill and a red pill. “You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.” As Neo reaches toward a pill, Morpheus reminds him, “Remember, all I am offering is the truth. Nothing more.” Neo chooses to see the world as it really is. He takes the red pill and is pounded with a series of devastating truths. His comfortable world is a dream created by machines to enslave him as an energy source. His life is an illusion implanted in his brain. After taking the red pill he becomes unplugged and experiences life as it is, uncomfortable and poor.
The trade-off is that Neo sees the world as it actually is and, in the end, gets to defeat the machines that have enslaved humanity. In the movie, the matrix was built to be a more comfortable version of the world. Our brains, likewise, have evolved to make our version of the world more comfortable: Duke, Annie. Thinking in Bets.
I am reading a fascinating book called The Science of Fate, I will have more insights to share in coming letters. In the book the author raises the controversial subject of epigenetics. It so happened this subject was also covered in a journal I was reading at the time and it got me thinking. Let us recap what epigenetics is.
It is the study of changes in organisms caused by modification of gene expression rather than alteration of the genetic code itself.
What we understand about epigenetics is that the environment has an effect on the way genetic code is read without actually changing the genetic code. It is all in the way the code is read that causes the expression of the code to be different to what is expected. The potential we learn from this is enormous. It means that despite your genetic hereditary make up, due to environmental factors (including trauma’s) different manifestations of what you expected nature would produce can come about. The question that follows is to what extent can we constructively influence our genetic makeup by messing with our environment. Naturally this is an ethical minefield.
I am planning to write a weekly thought piece called – Mike’s Thoughts, which will be included in PsyQuation’s weekly newsletter. I want to say that just like Neo in the movie The Matrix, I took the red pill. I want to urge all of you reading this to take the red pill too. Only the truth will set you free in your trading. If you want to be like everyone else in the matrix and believe everything is comfortable, you will probably become part of the 75% of FX traders who lose money.
The FX industry and most of its actors would rather make you think that it is fun and games and that great riches are waiting for you with little work – this is the illusion of the Matrix. In this letter I describe epigenetics, there is an important link I believe between this discovery and what we are trying to achieve with our PsyQuation platform and community. My goal is to create a community of red pill takers, people who are courageous truth seekers. By creating an environment of traders committed to learning more about their true strengths and weaknesses we have the chance to change the environment we are spending our trading time in and influence the way our trading genetics are interpreted by the market.
For some of you my thoughts may be considered too complicated too radical. I don’t plan to dummy down and pull my punches. If this is not for you that is fine I won’t take it personally. Mike’s Thoughts, is my way of helping contribute to the PsyQuation community that I have co-founded and put all my energy into for the last 4 years on the back of 18+ years trading professionally. See you next week ?.
